As children progress through their school years, it is important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics. At Nazareth an extensive range of learning data is used to monitor and track each child on a regular basis. In conjunction with school based learning data, NAPLAN data is also used and over time has become a valuable means of tracking learning gain.  

NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents (and schools and school systems) to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress. 

In recent time schools have been gradually transitioning to NAPLAN online. NAPLAN online is a series of tailored tests that adapt to student responses, providing better assessment and more precise results. Nazareth implements NAPLAN online in all aspects in Year 5 and in most aspects in Year 3 (transition to Year 3 Writing online should occur by 2022) 

Schools generally receive their students’ NAPLAN reports from mid-August to mid-September. The school will notify parents/carers who have children in Year 3 and Year 5 when the NAPLAN reports are being sent home. The same report format is used for every student in Australia.
