LILY CASSAR TYPE ONE DIABETES FUNDRAISER
Luke and Natalie Cassar (parents of Lily Cassar in Year 4) are joining JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) for an epic challenge trekking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea in 2020! Next ANZAC Day we’ll be deep in the jungle, trekking to raise money for research to change the lives of the 120,000 Australians living with type 1 diabetes including our daughter Lily. JDRF is a nonprofit organisation that funds type 1 diabetes research and advocates for regulation favourable to medical research and that makes it easier to market new medical devices to T1D patients.
Lily is a Type 1 Diabetic, she is currently 9 years old. She was diagnosed at the age of 5 with this disease. For the past few years Lily has been injecting herself with insulin needles up to 7 a days, on top of multiple finger prick tests to check her blood sugar levels. In March this year Lily started on an insulin pump machine. Whilst this reduced her insulin needles from 21 needles every 3 days to only 1, she is now connected to a machine 24hrs a day. This is by far not a cure but a better way to manage her diabetes. Our greatest hope is to one day find a cure.
Each $1,000 we raise could fund a month of testing and glucose monitoring equipment for one person enrolled in a clinical trial. Clinical trials are the final step in getting new treatments and therapies for T1D to the people like Lily.
We will be training over the next months to cope with trekking the 96km in 9 days over varied, rugged and remote terrain. This will challenge us both physically and mentally. We will track through mountain streams, up rugged jungle trails and into remote villages retracing the steps of the ANZAC soldiers. Best of all, we will be trekking for JDRF and raising funds for innovative research that will change the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes including Lily.
Our goal is to raise $7000, so if you are able to support us with a tax deductible donation we would greatly appreciate it. Together we can make a real impact to research in Type 1 Diabetes. It’s much easier than you think.
You can make a tax-deductible donation directly to JDRF via our Everyday Hero fundraising page
