During this week on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings a large number of children from the All Saints Parish including Nazareth and Stella Maris are being Confirmed by Bishop Bryan Mascord. This is a significant event in the lives of the children and their families. The sacrament of Confirmation which is one of the Catholic sacraments of initiation confirms our Baptism. The sacrament confirms the intention to follow the example of Jesus Christ. That is to live in a way that is underpinned by: wisdom, understanding, right judgement, reverence, knowledge, courage and wonder and awe. I encourage all of us during this week to be aware of this significant event in the lives of our Year 6 children and to be mindful of our own Confirmation and how we use the gifts of the spirit of Jesus Christ in our own lives.
I am pleased to inform families that children in Year 3 and Year 5 achieved pleasing results in the 2019 NAPLAN assessments. All parents / carers have received an individual report for their child and the school has commenced the process of analysing the NAPLAN data. The key findings from the analysis will be used in conjunction with the extensive range of learning data obtained from class based assessments to guide future recommendations associated with the delivery of quality teaching and learning. If any parent / carer requires further information in relation to the 2019 NAPLAN results please arrange a time to meet with your child’s teacher.
During the first 3 weeks of Term 4 I will be on Leave so that I can care for my wife who has been unwell. Melanie requires major surgery which will occur next week in Sydney. During my time of Leave, Mrs Lisa Tyson will be returning to Nazareth and will fulfil the role of Acting Principal. Mrs Tyson has been working for the last few months in the School Improvement – Specialist School Support Team at the Catholic Education Office. During this time Mrs Jodi Marsh will remain as Acting Assistant Principal.
As we approach the end of Term I wish to acknowledge the achievements of all children during this Term and wish all families a restful enjoyable school vacation.
Peter Dempsey
Principal
YEAR 6 CONFIRMATION
This week Year 6 will be receiving their final sacrament of confirmation on Tuesday, 24 and Wednesday, 25 September celebrated by Bishop Brian Mascord. Thank you to all of the parish and school community who have supported the children in making this a very special occasion for them and to the parents for presenting your children for this sacrament. Students have been very well prepared by their teachers to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and we pray that students continue their spiritual journey with support of family and friends.
ACTIVATE FIRE DAY
On Monday, 23 September 2019 all Year 6 students travelled to Ss Peter & Paul in Kiama for the ACTIVATE Fire day, along with students from Stella Maris, St Paul’s, Corpus Christi and St Joseph’s. ACTIVATE fire is a primary school Youth Ministry initiative providing catechesis and an opportunity for an encounter with Christ for Year 6 students. All students thoroughly enjoyed the day and happily immersed themselves in the activities, music and conversations with other students.
KINDERGARTEN MASS
In Term 4, Week 2 on Wednesday, 23 October Kindergarten will be celebrating mass at 9:30am. We would love family members to join us in the church.
In Science over the past couple of weeks 5O and 5B have been working together to answer the inquiry question "What do we need to live on a New Earth?" as part of our Science Unit - Earth and Space - Our Place in Space.
The task outlined that in the future, planet Earth may not be habitable for humans anymore and as Scientists it was the students jobs to find a "New Earth" for humans to colonise. Each Year 5 student was placed into a Collaborative Inquiry Jigsaw team to come up with an answer to the question. These teams were made up of 4 students with each student answering a question and constructing a building component.
Role 1 - Where will we move to? Research another place in our Solar System for humans to move to. You will make a model of this place and answer the following questions:
- What are some features of this place? (size, landscape, distance from other objects)
- What makes this place the best choice for humans?
Role 2 - How will we get there? Design a mode of transportation to ship humans to New Earth. You will need to take into consideration the supplies to be transported to set up our new civilisation, distance you need to travel, etc... Explain your design in one or more paragraphs. Then, you will build an actual rocket that will ‘launch’.
Role 3 - What do we need to survive? Design and create a model of a sustainable base for humans to live on New Earth. Think about essential support systems that we need (food, water, air, shelter) and explain these in one or more paragraphs.
Role 4 - Our place in Space. Build an Orrery and explain how it works, the parts you have included and our current place in space. Then, document your teams progress. You will be responsible for creating a Google Slide for your team and submitting.
All students were contributors and had to document their progress at various stages of construction by entering this information onto a shared Google Slide.
What did 5O like about this assessment??
Working with a group of kids that I wouldn’t normally work with. It showed me what other kids were capable of - Fletcher
The STEM building and working with others that have really good ideas - Stirling
Working with a team and building - Stella
How well my team get on together. If we had a problem we all came together and worked it out - Haley
