Catholic Schools Week (CSW) is an annual celebration of Catholic education. This year, Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong joins with dioceses and Catholic education systems and schools across the country to celebrate 200 years of Catholic education in Australia. CSW 2021 will be held throughout the Wollongong diocese from 1-7 March, with all 38 systemic Catholic schools (including Nazareth School) celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of Catholic education.
Mr Peter Hill, Director of Schools, recently stated “as we pause this week to reflect on the important work of Catholic education, we remember the intergenerational contributions that preceded us and that we continue to build upon. Since the very first Catholic school was established in New South Wales in 1820, countless children and young people have benefitted from the dedication and commitment of faith-filled staff in our Catholic schools.”
Throughout the last two centuries, thousands of dedicated women and men—often with very limited resources—rose to the challenge of building the vibrant and diverse Catholic education system that exists today.
The theme for CSW 2021 is ‘Faith in the future’. “When the pioneers of Catholic education in Australia taught their first lesson, I doubt they fully comprehended the resounding impact their actions would have 200 years later,” said Mr Hill.
Nazareth, this week has acknowledged CSW through the promotion of the school with student led school tours, a staff based prayer liturgy and various student activities during lunch times. This week the Student Hospitality Leadership Team have been outstanding school representatives leading 30 schools tours (with more booked in for next week).
Congratulations and well done to the students who represented Nazareth at this week’s South Coast Swimming Carnival held at Corrimal Pool. In particular, special congratulations to Morrison Cocksedge for being awarded Junior Boy Age Champion and acknowledgement and congratulations to Niamh Hicks for being awarded 3rd place in the 11 Year Girl Age Championships. The school community extends our best wishes to Morrison and Niamh along with Molly, Sonny, Daniel, Reid and Mattias who will now compete at the next level at the Diocesan Swimming Carnival.
Take care and enjoy the week ahead.

This week we began our new Mini Vinnies group for 2021. About 30 students Stage 3 came to this first meeting today and are very keen to begin making a difference to our school and local community. At the next meeting students will elect a President, a Vice President, a Secretary and a Media Officer. The aim of Mini Vinnies is to empower students to become advocates within their school and local community by putting their values into action. Mini Vinnies will meet every fortnight to learn about social justice issues, develop their leadership skills and engage with the wider St Vincent de Paul Society.
This week is Catholic Schools Week. Year 6 students have been running lunch time discos for a coin donation, with all money raised going towards Project Compassion. All students have had such fun participating in the disco, with Stage 2 still to celebrate their day tomorrow. Congratulations go to Year 6 for being excellent citizens in helping to raise money.
FIRST RECONCILIATION NEWS
Year 3 students are in Week 3 of their Reconciliation workshops. It has been excellent to see and hear the conversations taking place between the students and their parents about their spiritual lives. Thank you to the parents for supporting your child and showing them the important value of celebrating this sacrament. Students are working through a workbook and will complete their final workshops next week.
This weekend’s Masses parents are asked to read Workshop 3. All children and their parents will need to know the Act of Contrition perfectly.

We have been leaning about the story of Zacchaeus in Religion this week. We have heard the story, wondered about what Zacchaeus did, said and felt as well as responded through pictures and a retell of the story. Here are some responses/thoughts to share with you:
Jesus wants us to be good like Zacchaeus. By Brody.
The story of Zacchaeus helps us to be the best person we can be. By Blake.
Everybody did not like Zacchaeus but Jesus did. They had a dinner together and he said he would give the poor some money back. By Mia.
We are learning about this story in Lent because it is about Jesus. Zacchaeus gave money back to the poor in the story and we can do this as Catholic people in Lent. By Hayden.

In 5B we have really enjoyed working with our own ipads. Ipads are a new tool for our learning. We have Google Classroom and a lot of our work is posted into Google Classroom. This is where we can find a lot of our learning and complete many of our tasks, such as Comprehension Centres, Maths groups and some reading tasks. Even when we write in our books we can upload our work to SeeSaw so that our parents can see what we are learning and how we are going.
We are beginning to learn how to research using our ipads. This term in Science we are looking at Food and Fibre and we are researching primary industries. We are also planting a vegetable garden. We will take photos as our vegetables grow and use an app on our iPads to document the timeline.
We are loving our iPads!
NAPLAN 2021
Year 3 students and Year 5 students will complete NAPLAN Tests this year within the window of May 11 – 21. Due to COVID-19, NAPLAN was not held last year, however NAPLAN will go ahead this year.
AFTERNOON SCHOOL PICK UP PROCEDURE
Following a number of complaints from members of the general public to Shellharbour City Council, the school asks that parents/carers note the following information:
- Vehicles are not to block the round-a-bout at the intersection of College Ave and Benson St
- Vehicles are not to stop in the Bus Zone on College Ave nor in the No Stopping Zones on either side of the round-a-bout
- As previously communicated, when you arrive in the area if there is obvious traffic congestion, drive on for another 5 mins and then return. Remember all children are safely supervised until you arrive
- An alternative option is for Parents/Carers to park in the area then walk into the carpark to collect their child/ren.
Thankyou for your ongoing support and cooperation.
CLAIM THE DATE
The Nazareth Cross Country Carnival (competitors only) will be held on Wednesday March 24. The school is currently planning to hold the event off site. All details will be communicated in relation to confirmation of venue as soon as possible. The carnival will be open for competitors from 8 years old upwards. The Cross Country will be held over a 2 km course. More details communicated during the days ahead.
On Friday 19th March, it is National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. All children at Nazareth will be involved in acknowledging this day by participating in a range of activities from the 15 - 19 March. These activities will educate students about bullying and helpful strategies.
