Term 2 has commenced very well and all students have returned to school focused on their learning, which is pleasing to observe. Refining the skills of comprehension continues to be a key focus across the whole school. Students are responding well and this is becoming evident in the learning data which is closely monitored. In particular, I am pleased with the students I have worked with recently who are effectively utilising the comprehension strategies of predicting, inferring, visualising, summarising, making connections, questioning, monitoring and questioning. I encourage all parents/carers to read with your child/ren. Enjoy the time together and when possible discuss with your child what was read to ensure understanding.
I am pleased to invite all Grandparents, Great Grandparents and those that are like Grandparents to spend time at Nazareth school on Wednesday May 25. All are invited to attend Mass with the children in the All Saints church commencing at 9:00 am. At the conclusion of Mass whilst still in the church all grandparents and great grandparents will be acknowledged and then invited to morning tea within the school grounds. Following morning tea grandparents and great grandparents will be able to visit the classrooms. This will be the first time we have been able to conduct ‘Grandparent’s Day’ for several years and the school is excited to be able to welcome our special guests. Additional information will be relayed to families during the time ahead, in the meantime mark this significant date on your calendar and please extend the invitation to all of our Grandparents and Great Grandparents.
I extend my thanks to the many parents who were able to assist with today’s Mother’s Day stall. The stall was organised through the P&F Association and was a great success. The children loved buying from the stall. On behalf of the Nazareth school community we wish all mothers, step mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers and all those that fulfil the role of mother, a very happy Mother’s Day for Sunday.
Enjoy the week ahead.

Confirmation
Thank you to all of the families who attended the Confirmation Parent Information session last Thursday evening. We understand the busyness of the lives of families and understand the time that it takes to honour the many commitments for our children. We thank you for your commitment to our faith and honouring the commitment you made when you enrolled your children here at Nazareth Catholic School.
Mother’s Day
On Friday we will be holding a liturgy to celebrate Mother’s Day at 8.45 am in the Hall. This Liturgy will be celebrated by Year 2. At the end of the Liturgy we will also be hearing a Mother’s Day song from our choir, who have been working hard with Miss Di Fazio. All parents and families are welcome to attend this special celebration.
Kindergarten at Mass
This Saturday evening at 5 pm, Kindergarten will be presenting a special Mother’s Day song for the mothers of the parish. We would love as many family and friends as possible to attend to support our students.
All mass times can be found in the All Saints Parish Bulletin and all other important information. A link can be found on the Parish Website: https://www.dow.org.au/parish/all-saints-catholic-parish-shellharbour-city
This term in Religion the students have been learning about Easter and how it is a time for hope and new life. We have talked about stories in the Gospels when encounters with Jesus have changed people’s lives. In our life we all experience times when we feel ‘darkness’ and ‘fear’ because of illness, a lack of acceptance or even concern with the unknown. The students have written their own prayers thanking God for giving them hope and new life.

At the end of last term, we had so much fun testing our solar ovens that we designed and made during Science lessons.
We worked with a partner and we thought carefully about the types of materials that we needed to gather and how we would best design an oven that was powered by the sun.
The best part was when we got to test our solar ovens by melting chocolate. We were given a piece to melt and a piece to eat!
Even though all our ovens were very different, we were all successful in achieving our wanted results.
Update on the school playground areas
The Nazareth playground areas are still extensively impacted by the recent rain. The grounds are saturated and because of this the students have not been able to access the grounds. There are however some small areas that will be utilised from tomorrow for sport which will include preparation for the school’s Athletics Carnival. The school extends thanks to Mr Nic Ivanovski for preparing the school’s Long Jump pit.
NAPLAN
Students in Year 3 and Year 5 will join with students across NSW and participate in the NAPLAN Assessments commencing next Tuesday May 10. NAPLAN will be administered from May 10 to May 20. NAPLAN consists of 4 assessments, Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy. NAPLAN data which will be reported to parents, provides important information about a child’s learning progress and provides the school with data which is used along with school-based learning data to monitor and track learning gain and learning trends.
Isaac Baez
On the 8th of April, Isaac Baez competed at the Oceania BMX Champions in Brisbane. He won the 24" cruiser class in his age and as a result has qualified to compete at the BMX World Championships which are being held in Paris in July 2022.
Congratulations to the Cross Country runners
Well done and congratulations to all students who competed in last week’s school Cross Country. The event was held using a modified track and luckily finished up just before last week’s rain.
The Diocesan Representative Cross Country Carnival has been postponed due to the condition of the track at Wilandra (North Nowra) and will now be held May 24.
Congratulations to the students who will represent Nazareth School.

Welcome back to Term 2. We hope that everyone had a wonderful Easter and enjoyed the school holidays.
Our PB4L focus for this week is on ‘classroom procedures’ so that our students know the procedures for different times and activities in their class and can show the appropriate behaviours during specific activities in their classroom. Classroom teachers will also be reminding the students about the rewards for showing appropriate behaviour in the classroom and consequences if they are unable to display appropriate behaviour after a rule reminder.
We hope that everyone is having a great start to Term 2.
