Dear Parents and Carers,
2024 Wave FM School of the Year!
Congratulations and thank you for your support with this wonderful achievement. The combined effort from students, staff and families in promoting our entry was amazing. If you haven’t had a chance to view the surprise and excitement during the announcement, I encourage you to do so via our school Facebook page. We have already started seeking feedback from our students on possible sensory and creative play additions to our Kindergarten Playground. We look forward to providing further updates as the work progresses.
Last week, we were blessed with beautiful weather for our Athletics Carnival. Students from all year levels participated with great enthusiasm, showcasing their athletic skills and sportsmanship. Thank you to Mrs Mobberley, Mrs Smith, the Athletics Committee and the many helpers who volunteered to assist, without your support, such school events would not be possible.
Congratulations to the Year 6 children who received the Sacrament of Confirmation last Wednesday evening. This sacred milestone signifies their deepened commitment to their faith and their readiness to take on greater responsibilities within our Catholic community. We are proud of each one of them for their dedication during their preparation, and we pray that the gifts of the Holy Spirit guide and strengthen them as they continue their spiritual journey. Thank you to Fr Hung, Miss Biggs and the many staff who assisted with Wednesday’s Sacrament of Confirmation.
Semester 1 Reports are now available for viewing on the Compass portal. Please look for opportunities to celebrate the successes and achievements of your child. There is much to celebrate! In reading the reports, I would like to offer my congratulations to all students for their demonstrated commitment to their learning and effort in being respectful, responsible and life-long learners each day.
Every year in July, Australians come together to commemorate and appreciate the past, traditions, and accomplishments of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This nationwide celebration, known as National NAIDOC Week, offers a chance for all Australians to engage in festivities that honour the enduring cultures of the world's oldest continuous civilizations. This year's NAIDOC theme is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud. The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Nazareth school community will celebrate NAIDOC Week on Wednesday 31 July. All parents, carers and grandparents are most welcome to join us for a special liturgy at 9:30am.
Next term we welcome Mr Edwards (Acting Assistant Principal) back to Nazareth following a period of parental leave. The following staffing updates will also take effect from the beginning of Term 3:
- Mrs Mammone will teach 5B each Monday, Tuesday and Friday.
- Mrs Leahan Eggleton will teach 5B each Wednesday and Thursday. Mrs Eggleton will also provide learning support to Year 5 each Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Mrs Sarah Selmes will continue to teach KN each Thursday and provide learning support to Year 4 each Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Mrs Katherine D’Souza will continue to teach 3H each Tuesday and provide learning support to Year 3 each Monday and Wednesday.
I would like to thank you for your continued support and involvement in the life of our school throughout Term 2. Your children have worked incredibly hard this term, displaying remarkable moments of growth in faith, learning and wellbeing.
As we look forward to the upcoming break, I encourage you to take time to rest, rejuvenate and create opportunities to have fun with your children. Please note that school resumes for all staff and students on Monday 22 July.
Have a happy, relaxing and safe holiday break.
Kind regards,
Mr Matt Downes
(Acting Principal)

In English, we have been having so much fun in our finger gym groups where we are building and strengthening our fine motor skills. We have been writing simple sentences and practising our handwriting. This week, we are bringing in our favourite stories to share with our friends. We created some beautiful illustrations of our favourite stories.

SEMESTER 1 STUDENT REPORTS
As you may be aware, the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) have undertaken a comprehensive review of the NSW Curriculum, leading to curriculum reform and subsequent implementation of a reformed curriculum which commenced in 2023. In response to the curriculum changes, Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong has made significant modifications to student semester reports for Primary schools to better reflect your child's academic progress at key points throughout the year and provide parents and carers with a clear picture of their child’s strengths and areas for improvement in specific subject areas.
The following changes will be evident in your child’s semester report from Semester 1 2024:
- A ‘new look’ report format released via Compass reflecting the outcomes of the new K-10 English and Mathematics syllabuses providing a descriptor for each of the focus areas found in the respective syllabuses
- All Kindergarten students will now receive a written report in Semester 1 and Semester 2 with a three-point grade scale used to report student achievement using the following performance descriptors:
- Thorough
- Sound
- Basic
- Students in Year 1 - Year 6 will continue to receive semester reports twice a year with a five-point grade scale used to report student achievement using the following performance descriptors:
- Extensive
- Thorough
- Sound
- Basic
- Elementary
- There will be no general comment in the Semester 1 Reports.
These changes are consistent across all Catholic primary schools in the Diocese of Wollongong. The following video provides an update on these reporting changes:

NAPLAN Individual Student Reports
Students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) during Term 1. A NAPLAN individual student report will be provided for your child early in Term 3. The same report format is used for every student in Australia.
NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards. There is a standard for each assessment area at each year level. Proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. Student achievement is shown against 4 levels of proficiency:
- Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
If your child participated in 2024 and does not receive a report by Friday 2 August, contact the school office.

See how the surprise announcement went down by clicking on the link below.

During Week 10 our focus is on two aspects of PB4L which are very important at Nazareth: our Correction Sequence and no hat no play rule in the playground.
During class teachers will explicitly teach the posters for First Reminder, Second Reminder and Consequence. Teachers will discuss with their class what is expected following a reminder and what consequences will result from behaviour choices. This will lead children to understand and use reminders as an opportunity to consider what behaviours they need to change in order to be successful.
Teachers will also remind the students to continually wear their hat whilst playing. On the occasions they forget a hat, they will remain in the shade during play time.
