The recently held school disco was an outstanding success and I wish to extend my thanks to the many parents and family members who assisted on the evening. Without doubt it is the largest number of children we have ever had in attendance at such an event and from what I observed everyone had a great time.
During this Term the school has been able to hold and be involved in a number of significant events and initiatives including, the Year 6 excursion to Cataract Scout Camp, the Shellharbour Reconciliation Flag Walk, Back Flips Against Bullying, the school disco, Grandparent’s Day, involvement in the Parish’s Multi-Cultural Day, Mini Vinnies, NAPLAN for Years 3 and 5, Mother’s Day Liturgy and Stall, participation in the Diocesan Cross Country Time Trial and NSW MacKillop Cross Country, school tours and weekly school assemblies. I am pleased that despite major disruption caused by illness and extreme weather, the school is now engaged with regular additional activities and events which provide a diverse range of extra curricula opportunities for our students.
I remind all parents that the school’s preferred procedures in relation to communication with staff include, phone call to the school office or email to the school’s info@nscdow.catholic.edu.au, or in person contact at the school office. Emails and messages from parents will be forwarded to the particular staff member. I thank everyone for your cooperation in relation to these preferred options. Please note that I am currently reviewing the use of Seesaw across the whole school and I will communicate with parents next Term the outcomes of the review.
Please remember the many families that are part of the school community that are in need of our prayers due to personal circumstances. As a Catholic parish school, the challenges experienced by so many should never to be too far from our thoughts, prayers and acts of generosity and kindness.
Enjoy the week ahead

Confirmation
Confirmation workshops are continuing for Year 6 students making the Sacrament of Confirmation and next week will be the last week students need to attend these workshops. Just a reminder that it is important that parents please be on time when arriving at these workshop sessions. If your child is attending a 3:00 pm workshop, you are required to pick your child up from school at 2:45 pm and accompany them to the Hall for a 3:00 pm start. Supervision at school is only until 2:45 pm and teachers need to prepare for the workshop session. These workshops are also an important time for you to have a conversation with your child regarding the workshop worksheets and their preparation for Confirmation.
Whole School Mass
Our next whole school mass is next Friday, 24 June. We will be celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart. Devotion to the Sacred Heart is one of the most widely practised and well-known devotions, taking Jesus' physical heart as the representation of his divine love for humanity. The devotion especially emphasises the unmitigated love, compassion, and long-suffering of the heart of Christ towards humanity.
Class Masses
This week on Wednesday, Kindergarten and Year 5 attended Mass. Next Wednesday Year 1 and Year 6 will be attending. It has been wonderful to see some parents and family members attending Wednesday Masses with the students. We welcome any parents, family members or friends who wish to join us at any of the Wednesday Masses.
Mini Vinnies
Our Mini Vinnies group of students meet each fortnight. They are a committed and dedicated group of Year 5 and Year 6 students who are advocates wanting to put their values into action. This week at our meeting we have been discussing ideas for the Mini Vinnies Winter Appeal. Keep your eyes out for our next fundraising event coming soon!
All mass times can be found in the All Saints Parish Bulletin and all other important information. A link can be found on the Parish Website: https://www.dow.org.au/parish/all-saints-catholic-parish-shellharbour-city
In Religion, 3H have been learning about Pentecost. We read the story of Pentecost and talked about what it would have looked like, felt like and sounded like at Pentecost. Here are some of our ideas.
Throughout the second half of this term Year 6 have been focusing on the
preparation of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Throughout this unit of work Year 6 have been able to:
● identify some images in Scripture that reveal God as Holy Spirit
● describe the relationship between the sacraments of Baptism and
Confirmation
● describe the main structure of the sacrament of Confirmation
● identify the main beliefs expressed in the Nicene Creed
● explain how the saints have lived the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Starting Monday of Week 9, Year 6 students will be creating informative posters about their chosen saint. In these posters, they will explain the background, history, trials and triumphs of their saint, the qualities they possess and how they used them to do God’s work throughout their life. These posters will be displayed in our Church ready for Confirmation on Sunday 3rd July.
Backflips Against Bullying
Last Friday, the Backflips Against Bullying Team visited Nazareth for a highly engaging and entertaining performance for students in Kindergarten to Year 6. The performance highlighted what bullying is and strategies to address bullying.
Here are some insights from students in 3H:
- Blake: I learnt that bullying doesn't make you tough.
- Carter: I learnt that bystanders can help.
- Zoe: I learnt that bullying is repeated.
- Brody: I learnt that telling a teacher is the best way to sort out bullying.
This message is to advise you that Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) Leadership Team including the Director of Schools has decided that all sporting gala days set for the near future across the whole Diocese of Wollongong, be cancelled.
The levels of staff and student absenteeism across all Diocesan schools is at extreme levels, so non-pathway sport (that is in relation to pathways to higher levels of representation) is suspended until further notice. The aim is to ensure that teachers are available for classroom teaching in this time of excessive staff shortages.
This is unfortunate as the gala days, as you know, are so valued and enjoyed by our students in a time when exercise and activity are so important. It is, however, most important to consider the widespread nature of current illness and absenteeism and the predicted forecast that this pattern will continue over the next month or so.
Athletics carnival
Athletics, being a pathway event, will continue as planned. Our school athletics carnival will go ahead as planned. The Carnival is being held on Thursday, 30th June, Week 10. Further details will be communicated during the time ahead via compass.
We will be calling for nominations for the 800m event for the Athletics carnival. Please discuss this with your child (8yrs and above) if they would like to participate in the event. The event will be held at 8:00 am, this is to allow for enough time to complete all events. This means children will need to be at the athletics carnival at 7:50 am if they are running the 800m. Mr Reid will collect 800m nominations in class.
Cross Country
Earlier this term Sonny Cocksedge competed with the Dioceses Cross Country Team. He participated in the Mackillop trials, which were held in Eastern Creek, Sydney. Sonny took part in one race which was three kilometres. He came 42nd and has said, “the race was very hard and if given the chance he would like to compete again”. He competed with people from all over New South Wales. Sonny has had to do a lot of stretching before taking part in the trial. He has had lots of fun and was glad to have shared this amazing experience. We are so proud to have Sonny!

This week our PB4L focus is on help seeking. It is okay to need help. Everyone needs help sometimes. It is important to ask for help when we need it.
Students need to know when they need help, who they can go to for help, and how to seek help appropriately.
Classroom teachers will revise the procedures for help seeking so that students will know what to do when they need help in the classroom or on the playground. They will also assist students to understand the difference between reporting an incident and ‘dobbing’.
On a another note, we are close to having a winner with our PB4L house colour tokens! We will be announcing the winning house colour soon. The children have been trying so hard to earn a token for their house colour. Well done!
PARENTS AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION
The P&F are currently in the process of organising a Pie Drive fundraiser. Keep your eyes peeled for an order form which should be sent out early next week.
School Disco
The recently held school disco was an outstanding success. It was by far the largest number of children we have ever had in attendance at such an event.
A huge thank you to all our staff and parent helpers for such a successful evening.
