Lord, teach me to be generous,
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
To give and not to count the cost,
To fight and not to heed the wounds,
To toil and not to seek for rest,
To labor and not to ask for reward,
Save that of knowing that I do your will.
Amen
This week, Nazareth has celebrated The World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Pope Francis stated “This day invites us to reflect on the bond that unites young and old. The Lord trusts that young people, through their relationship with the elderly, will realise that they are called to cultivate a memory and recognise the beauty of being a part of a much larger history” (Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for The World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, 23 June 2023).
We know that our students derive great joy from Grandparents Day and we hope that all of our visitors also had a wonderful time joining us for Mass, partaking in refreshments and visiting their grandchildren in the classrooms.
This year's day is characterized by its close connection with the NAIDOC theme “For our Elders”. It is also connected to the World Youth Day, which will be held in Lisbon, Portugal in August. This relationship is evident in Pope Francis' message to elders, inviting them to pray for and bless the youth who will participate in the WYD, and to young people, urging them to visit and listen to the grandparents and the elderly in their community. The Pope stressed that between the two generations there is a communion of life and faith, a mutual giving and gratitude, a witness of hope and charity. Miss Megan Biggs has been chosen by the Diocese of Wollongong as a Diocesan representative at World Youth Day this year. We wish Megan all the very best for her journey with the confidence that she will be a marvelous ambassador for the youth of our Diocese. We look forward to her sharing her stories with us upon her return in Week 5.
On behalf of the Nazareth school community, I extend congratulations to the Year 6 students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on 18th and 19th July. We extend our thanks to Fr Joe for his ongoing support and guidance, to the parents and school staff for preparing the students, to the parish secretarial staff who assisted with the smooth operation of the sacramental program and to the All Saints parish community for their ongoing prayers.
Confirmation
Congratulations to all Year 6 students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation last Tuesday and Wednesday evening. The students presented themselves so very beautifully and reverently before Bishop Brian Mascord. We thank you, the parents, for supporting your children in this very important Sacrament and helping them continue on their faith journey. Please continue to pray for these children.
Grandparents Day Mass
It was delightful to see so many parents, grandparents and family members at the Grandparents Day Mass on Wednesday. We filled our church. It is so uplifting for the children to see their family members attend church with them.
Wednesday Mass and Faith & Learning visits
Next week Kindergarten and Year 5 will be attending 9am Wednesday Mass. Kindergarten will be having their learning visit to the classroom with parents. Year 5 will take their turn with parent visits in Week 7. Families of both Kindergarten and Year 5 students are warmly welcome to attend Mass with their children. We love to see as many families as possible.
Fundraiser St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal
On Monday, 31st July, we will be holding a fundraiser to support the St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Students are required to wear their full school uniform and can add winter accessories like beanies, gloves and/or scarves to stay warm throughout the day. We kindly request students to bring a gold coin donation as all proceeds will go to St Vincent de Paul. Hot chocolates will be available in the morning for a donation. Thank you for your generosity!
All mass times can be found in the All Saints Parish Bulletin and all other important information. A link can be found on the Parish Website: https://www.dow.org.au/parish/all-saints-catholic-parish-shellharbour-city
1S have started to learn about the wonderful stories that are in the Bible. We have learnt that there are stories called parables and they are told to help us to know God better.
We read some scripture and talked about what a treasure is and what precious means.
We talked about our favourite Bible story and wrote about something precious to us.
In Week 6 Nazareth will join schools across the country to celebrate Book Week! This year’s theme is Read, Grow, Inspire.
As part of our Book Week celebrations we will have a school book fair in the library from 21st - 25th August. Students will be able to visit the library and purchase books throughout the week.
On Friday 25th August we will have a Book Week Character/Costume Parade in the playground starting at 8:45am. Students are invited to come to school dressed up as their favourite book character to join in our school parade.
As usual we have had a very busy start to Term 3 but the highlight for this term is always “Grandparent’s Day.”
We welcomed so many of our grandparents into out classroom following Mass this morning. Some of us interviewed our grandparents finding out what it was like for them when they were our age.
Question: What games did you play when you were my age?
Answers: skipping, board games, marbles, hop scotch, hide and seek, murder in the dark, elastics, soccer, handball
Question: When you were my age what did you want to be when you were older?
Answer: archaeologist, nurse, tradie, teacher, shop assistant, secretary, programer.
Question: What did you like doing with your friends?
Answer: go to the beach, scouts, play in the cubby house, street cricket, skipping, dance, play tennis, ride our bikes, fishing, play on the monkey bars.
We also created acrostic poems and listed the ‘Top Ten’ things we loved most about our grandparents. Some of our reasons were;
- Gives big hugs
- Cooks with me
- Tells me stories
- Is funny
- Takes me places
- Is cheeky
- Tells me stories of my family
- Baby sits me
- Is beautiful
- Is good at drawing
They loved seeing the portraits that we had created of them. The technique we used was ‘collage’.
We took heaps of photos to remember this special day and we even had our own big photo frame. We love our Grandparents!
We extend sincere thanks to the grandfather of Aaliyah and Chelsea Betz, Angelo Ferrandino, for assisting our Athletics Squad students with their long jump skills.
Mr Ferrandino has competed in Long Jump at a National level and has also coached Long Jump. He has a wealth of knowledge which he is willingly sharing in preparation for the South Coast Athletics Carnival.
Sophia Cobby, Selena Ramos, Milan Owen, Anthony Oberdan, Savannah Pepper, Lexis Formosa, Scarlett Belo, Madeline Schonrock, Mace Grimes, Kaiden Murphy, Charlie Micallef, Jagger Onorato, Mason Arenega, Gabriella Divko.
Welcome back to Term 3!
Over the next two weeks our PB4l focus will be on peer to peer respect in playground games. Classroom teachers will develop with their students a list of games they can play on the playground and will teach and revise the rules of those games. Classes will discuss what peer to peer respect by being a good sport looks, sounds and feels like.
Students will be learning how to:
-
name the games I can play;
-
talk about the rules for the games I can play;
-
follow the rules for the games I play;
-
play games safely;
-
take turns in games;
-
accept it when I am out in games;
-
celebrate the successes of my peers in games;
-
know what I can do if I am struggling to regulate my emotions in a game.
