As children progress through their school years, it is important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics. At Nazareth an extensive range of learning data is used to monitor and track each child on a regular basis. In conjunction with school based learning data, NAPLAN data is also used and over time has become a valuable means of tracking learning gain.
NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents (and schools and school systems) to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress.
In recent time schools have been gradually transitioning to NAPLAN online. NAPLAN online is a series of tailored tests that adapt to student responses, providing better assessment and more precise results. Nazareth implements NAPLAN online in all aspects in Year 5 and in most aspects in Year 3 (transition to Year 3 Writing online should occur by 2022)
Schools generally receive their students’ NAPLAN reports from mid-August to mid-September. The school will notify parents/carers who have children in Year 3 and Year 5 when the NAPLAN reports are being sent home. The same report format is used for every student in Australia.
During the days ahead, please remember in your thoughts and prayers the families from the Nazareth School community who are currently experiencing illness and hardship.
Take care

On Mother’s Day, Sunday, 9 May Kindergarten students presented a hymn at Sunday morning mass and then presented their mum’s with a small gift. Kindergarten sang beautifully and were clearly excited at being asked to sing in front of the congregation. Kindergarten teachers did a great job to prepare the children and congratulations to all of the children for making Nazareth proud!
PARISH BULLETIN
Each week All Saints Parish continues to present a Bulletin with the weekend Readings and other important information. A link can be found on the Parish Website: http://www.allsaintscatholic.org.au/allsaintscatholic/Welcome.html
This week 3H are focusing on belonging to the Catholic community through the Sacrament of Baptism.
Students remembered times when they had been to baptisms of friends or family members and described the processes involved.
We looked at the importance of being welcomed the church by the Sign of the Cross given from the Priest, Parents and Godparents, the blessing of the holy water, why the colour white is the colour used for baptisms, the use of the oil of Chrism and why the candle is lit from the Paschal or Easter candle and blessed by the Priest.
Last Thursday, all of stage three travelled to Canberra for our overnight excursion. After leaving our school at 8am, we had lots of fun on the bus on the way. When we arrived in Canberra, our first stop was to the old Parliament House to learn about voting and democracy in Australia. Our next stop was at the Australian War Memorial. We absolutely loved this, and were in complete awe at the tomb of the unknown soldier and the Hall of Memory. After a walk along ANZAC parade (to wear us out!) we made our way to our hotel. We had dinner and played trivia, before collapsing into our beds.
The next day we were up and on the bus early, and off to the CSIRO. Here we competed in teams to complete a scientific treasure hunt. We then travelled to Parliament House. It was amazing and we had a great time, role-playing what they do in the House of Representatives when making a law. We ended our tour of Canberra with a relaxing hour at the National Gallery, where we saw some incredible artworks and sculptures.
Before we knew it, we were on our way home, via a quick stop at McDonald’s. Thanks to the teachers who came with us. And thanks to our parents for giving us this great opportunity.

PARLIAMENT AND CIVICS EDUCATION REBATE (PACER)
Students from our school or have recently undertaken, an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
OPEN CLASSROOMS AND PICNIC LUNCH
The school invites parents/carers to visit classrooms from 12:30pm this Friday May 14. Following the open classrooms parents/carers are welcome to share a picnic lunch with your child/ren in the playground.
