Lord, teach me to be generous,
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
To give and not to count the cost,
To fight and not to heed the wounds,
To toil and not to seek for rest,
To labor and not to ask for reward,
Save that of knowing that I do your will.
Amen
Staffing Announcement
Penelope Constable will soon be leaving us to commence her maternity leave and prepare for the arrival of her baby. After an extensive recruitment process, I am pleased to announce the employment of Mrs Melanie Pilon as the new teacher of 2L.
Melanie is a mother of three and a passionate educator, who has experience working at Nazareth. She is currently working at another Diocesan school and won't be able to commence her time with us until the start of Term 3. In the interim period (Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 2), Mrs Stephanie Rowles and Mrs Gemma Georgopoulos (both regular casual teachers at Nazareth) will teach 2L, with Stephanie teaching Monday to Thursday and Gemma teaching on Friday. I am sure that you will join me in wishing Penelope all the very best for the next chapter of her life, and making Mel feel very welcome when she joins our school community.
As we move into the cold and flu season, I take this opportunity to remind all to continue hygiene practices to keep ourselves and others safe. Encouraging social distancing whenever possible, covering our mouths when we cough or sneeze, and regular, thorough handwashing and sanitising are some of the ways that we can stay healthy. Please keep your child at home if they have symptoms indicating that they may be contagious.
National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year’s theme for Reconciliation Week: “Be A Voice for Generations” is a challenge to us all to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation and work together towards a just and equitable future for all Australians.
Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part, we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.
World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June and this year falls on Monday Week 7.
The theme for World Environment Day 2023 is Beat Plastic Pollution with the focus of addressing the significantly destructive impact of plastics on our natural environment and on human society and health. The statistics and case-studies provided about plastics by the United Nations are indeed alarming! The following examples reflect why we all should be concerned:
* Over 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced annually with half being “single-use”.* Less than 10% is recycled, with an estimated 19-23 million tonnes ending in waterways, “approximately the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers all together.
* Each person in the world takes in more than 50,000 microplastic particles per year – each up to 5mm in diameter - from our food, the air we breathe and the water we drink. As the United Nations indicates, “Environmental health is inextricably linked to human health.”
* The amount of plastic entering the seas in the world will triple by 2040, “equivalent to 50 kilograms of plastics per metre of coastline worldwide.”There will be a World Environment Day liturgy at Nazareth on Monday 5th June at 8:30am.
Thank you Stage 1
Thank you to all of the Stage 1 families and friends who celebrated Pentecost at the Saturday evening mass last weekend. It is one of the most important feast days of the year that concludes the Easter season and celebrates the beginning of the Church, occurring 50 days after the death and resurrection of Jesus, and ten days after his ascension into heaven.
Confirmation
Year 6 students are moving closer to their sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday, 18 July and Wednesday, 19 July. Students are in Week 2 of their workshops and thank you to the parents for bringing your children and supporting their faith journey towards this most important sacrament. Just a reminder for the students to colour the dove and place their name on it and either return it at one of the workshops or bring it to one of the Year 6 teachers. If you cannot make it to your designated workshop, please hop into another workshop in that week.
This weekend at mass leaflets will be distributed containing information that advises families of the Mass in which their child will be confirmed.
Wednesday Mass and Faith & Learning visits
This week Year 3 will be attending the 9am mass. After mass we would love all of the families to join their children in the classroom to enjoy a snapshot of their learning. Next week Year 1 will be celebrating mass, followed by a classroom visit. We warmly invite all parents, family members or friends who wish to join the children at any of the Wednesday masses.
All mass times can be found in the All Saints Parish Bulletin and all other important information. A link can be found on the Parish Website: https://www.dow.org.au/parish/all-saints-catholic-parish-shellharbour-city
This week Year 3 had their faith and learning visit. Firstly, 3L gathered together with the community at All Saints Catholic Church to celebrate the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. During Mass, Father Joe spoke to the children about their upcoming Holy Communion and ways to prepare for this sacrament.
After Mass, parents, grandparents and other special visitors were welcomed into our classroom to participate and view an aspect of our learning. 3L loved spending time playing ‘telling the time’ memory with their visitors. Below are some images from our Faith and Learning visit.

This week 3H loved having some special visitors for our Faith and Learning visit! We enjoyed seeing our special visitors at Mass with us and then welcomed them into our classroom, where we completed an activity about Time. Thank you to those who were able to join us!
Lunch time reading club
This term students are invited to a lunch time reading club during the second half of lunch. Reading club will be open at lunchtime for Stage 1 students on Tuesdays, Stage 2 students on Wednesdays and Stage 3 students on Thursdays. (Kindergarten students will be able to come to the reading club later in the year)
Premiers Reading Challenge
The Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC) is underway. The challenge will continue until Friday 18th August.
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will complete the PRC at school, reading books as a class. The K-2 teachers will complete their reading challenge logs.
Students in Years 3, 4 5 and 6 are invited to participate in the PRC individually, with the goal of reading a total of 20 books. (10 of these books need to be nominated PRC books and the other 10 books may be of personal choice).
Students who complete the PRC will have their name displayed in the school library. Congratulations to those who have already completed the PRC, our library display is growing!
NSW Government Student Learning Library
The NSW Government has created an excellent resource to support learning at home in English and Mathematics for Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students. Please click on the link to view the video explaining how to access and navigate this resource.
This site can be very useful for parents to assist their children who are having an extended period of leave due to illness or holiday.
We have recently had a number of complaints from our surrounding neighbours about parking over driveways and also in the Walloaroo Pre School car park next door.
Please see the below points to ensure the safety of our students here at Nazareth.
- drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road
- never call out to them from across the road - it is very dangerous
- always take extra care in 40km school zones
- follow all parking signs - these help keep your child as safe as possible
- park responsibly even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate
- never double park - it is illegal and puts children at risk
- never do a U-turn or a three point turn outside the school as it puts children at risk of harm
- model safe and considerate pedestrian and driver behaviours to your child
- always give way to pedestrians, particularly when entering and leaving driveways.
Athletics Carnival
Thank you to the entire school community for your assistance at our Athletics Carnival. It was a wonderful day and it was fantastic to see the whole school community come together to cheer the students on. We will get through the competitive long jump and shot put at school. When all of the results are in we will present ribbons and age champions. We will communicate the details of this information to you when we have arranged a time and date.
Thank you to all the volunteers who made our carnival possible, without you the carnival would not have been able to go ahead.
Netball Training
Please note the following times and days for morning netball training in preparation for the Netball Gala Day. Thank you to the staff and parent volunteers who make this training possible.

Over the next few weeks, the PB4L focus will continue to be on RESPECT. One of our school rules is that at Nazareth we are all respectful. We are going to focus on peer to peer respect. Teachers will be revising with the students the second and third letters of RESPECT.
E stands for Empathy is to listen and connect.
Students will be taught and reminded to listen and respond respectfully to others to show empathy, make connections with the experiences of their peers and consider the perspectives of their peers.
S stands for Self Monitor - think first.
Students will be taught and reminded to identify their feelings, talk about how they are feeling and think of some strategies I can use to regulate their feelings.
